Question system monitor

I just installed Redhat and I'm running Gnome and it seems a bit slow. I even get little tracers when I drag windows. I ran the system monitor and the CPU Used stat stays around between 5-20% when the system is idle, but as soon as I move the mouse it jumps to around 50% and when I drag a window it maxes out to 100%. is that normal?

It depends, if you are using a 800 MHZ computer, it's not normal but if you are using a Pentium 166 and 64 of RAM then it's even running very fast and you should be proud of it since Redhat/Fedora are a bit slower . As you did not say anything about your hardware specifications as processor and amount of RAM, we won't know

Try running "top" press M to srot by memory and P to sort by CPU usage. You should be able to find what is eating away at your resources.

Hmmm.... it should runs fine with that specification. I have P2 - 400MHZ with 512 RAM and it runs smooth. Give it a try to Fluxbox or Blackbox. They are pretty light window managers and runs amazinly fast . They don't have the eye candy of Gnome/KDE but are very useful and effective. Worth a shot

Good luck!

P.S: check for the services you are running at the background as david_ross suggested, it might help.
