System hangs on boot up

All was going okay until this morning I went to boot up and after getting a visual login, all I get is the desktop "Red Hat 8.0" display. No icons appear. The system just sits there. At bootup I did try to edit the bootup to go into "5" but nothing helps. I have 2 kernels and they both do it AND my bootup disk also just hangs. If it is a hardware command, what is it in the bash sheel since I can get a command line prompt, but that's it!
