Talking system files

can anyone please tell me how to make a program I just install available.

lets just say you just installed opera.....

From the GUI...

Click ALT-F2 then in the dialog box type "opera" then click OK or run.

From the terminal...

type "opera"

Hope this is what you are asking...

You might also want to put a symlink to it in one of the usual binary dirs, like /usr/bin or /usr/local/bin so that its in people's path. Say that you install your program to /usr/local/newProgram/bin/myProg then you would do a
ln -s /usr/local/newProgram/bin/myProg /usr/bin/myProg
Does that help or am I answering a different question?
