System failure on multiple distros.

[SOLVED] It was the eco-mode on my PSU that caused the failure. I'm ordering a new unit. Thank you to everyone for your help!!

Hello fine people!

This is going to be a long post, so buckle up! AND THANK YOU FOR READING IT! I'm so frustrated and angry that I can't find a fix or figure out what's wrong that I've seriously sat here looking at my beautiful pc that I built and considered smashing it will a baseball bat. I've been searching every error and failure for about 3 weeeks now (when I'm off work).

In short, my issue is my pc keeps freezing. None of the keyboard shortcuts work. I'm apparently somewhat of a noob because I have to look up every command line/step to do anything in the terminal. I can run updates and do VERY basic things, cd, mkdir, and touch, again, everything else I refer to notes and forums. HOWEVER, I'm not so much of a noob that I don't read forums & wikis. Trust me, I've been searching for answers.

I hope I've posted this in the correct forum, I figured since it covers multiple distros, and I don't really know if it's a hardware issue or not, I'll try here first.

My pc specs are:

It just freezes and I have to hard reboot. Here's a little history, a few months ago (I was running Manjaro KDE Plasma) my computer just started shutting down. No warning, no lag, just boom off. I figured out I was kicking the plug. But then it happened another 1 or 2 times. Snap packages, scanner packages, and Dolphin started to not work/act finicky. Also it started freezing, my music would get stuck on one note then I couldn't do anything and I'd have to hard reset again. I was keeping my system up-to-date (with sudo pacman -Syu) and that's the extent of "maintenance" I know.

A few weeks ago I began distro hopping because I started to see a lot of posts about Manjaro having issues with kernels etc., plus with the issues I was having I figured my OS was jacked from something I'd done. The first one I tried was ArcoLinux because that's working well on my XPS 13, nope, still crashing. I thought I did something wrong, so I reinstalled it. Still no. Then I went to Debian, again the freezing and crashing. I couldn't find anything with journalctl. I then went to openSUSE Leap 15.2. It was okay for a couple hours then the same thing started AGAIN. I decided I'm too used to pacman so I looked for an Arch-based distro and landed on EndeavourOS. I verified the iso and was maticulous in the installation. This install lasted a few hours before the crashing started.

What was I doing when these crashes happened? Pretty lightweight stuff; I wasn't compiling, rendering, running 12 VMs, or whatever else is a high strain on systems. On Manjaro I was editing audio file metadata in the music player. I'd have 2 or 3 Dolphin windows open, a browser (with 15-20 tabs open), the terminal, sublime text3 with a handfull of txt files open, and maybe a renamer. Once I started distro hopping the programs that were open were: 2 Dolphin windows, a browser or two (not as many tabs open though), settings, sublime with some txt files and .bashrc, and a terminal or two. I've tried to keep htop running, but since I'm dumb, it doesn't mean anything to me.

Before I installed EndeavourOS I started to look at my hardware, my bios had 11 updates that needed to happen. I was hoping that was the obvious issue. One by one I flashed all 11 bios updates, then installed Endeavour.

Also, when I was trying to search each error it was mostly bluetooth, window sizing, or ended up being something "to ignore".

Still with me? GREAT!! Now, here's all the logs that I still have, I think I forgot to save the logs from Debian.

If you need to see full logs I can post some, they are just so huge, I didn't want to make this post a novella.

I wish I could recount what I've tried, but I don't remember. I know I tried to update gpu drivers & I did upgrade the bios.

This is all I know to tell you all. Any help/sage advice/knowledge would be greatly appreciated!!

I've posted this in linuxquestions.org & r/linuxquestions.

Some crashes from EndeavourOS. The links are what I tried to do for that error.

Looks like you didn't do your homework. Or didn't read the documentation that came with the parts you purchased for this home made hardware catastrophe.
It's your hardware setup/f...up, not linux.

As I said, it was running Manjaro just fine until 2-3 months ago. I built this "f***ed" up machine nearly 3 years ago.

Thank you for your useless feedback.

With all the bios updates, did you go back to see if something is different than it should be?

Like the list of known disk devices?

Memory speeds? (I had one that was caused by a slight mismatch here - once fixed it worked just fine).

If it was working before and froze, then I would suspect some hardware failure somewhere (even possibly dust crud in a slot...).

Have you done memtest ? There used to be an option on Ubuntu's live media to run memtest.
And, perhaps in BIOS there may be a log that could help you? Ofcourse this depends on BIOS, but worth checking...

Good point. Thank you. I didn't do that, I'll check on that.

I just finished running one an hour ago with zero errors

I didn't consider a bios log, I'll check the manufacturer to see if I can find one.

Don't know if there's a better way - but I've been having some success in diagnosing hardware issues with "dmesg".
But maybe only because my Gnome-terminal output is in 4 colours, green for line number(?), orange for the description and white (black below) for the item itself - unless it's bright red for error.
example:
Code:
[ 7.948716] scsi 9:0:0:0: Direct-Access WD My Passport 2627 4008 PQ: 0 ANSI: 6

[ 7.951024] sd 9:0:0:0: [sdd] Very big device. Trying to use READ CAPACITY(16).

[ 7.951844] sd 9:0:0:0: [sdd] No Caching mode page found
(It's having an issue with an external drive)

This IDs the problem and then I go search in the kernel docs and the ArchWiki to start looking for what I can find.

You have not mentioned anything about temps. I had a machine that was running just fine for a few years, then it started doing similar sudden shutdowns.
After a lot of troubleshooting I found the cause was a failure of both the CPU fan slowing down and old dried thermal paste on the CPU. The system would operate just fine at very low loads but when the loads would peak it would overheat and shutdown. Even monitoring with gkrellm could not see the sudden temp spikes quickly enough for me to react and prevent the shutdowns.

Replacing the CPU cooler fixed it.

Hmmm, that thought did cross my mind. I can start troubleshooting that. How long does thermal paste last? I built this about 3 years ago. I noticed when I was doing the bios updates it was spiking to 95-97F. I changed my fan settings to kick into a higher rpm at 90 degrees.

97F or 97C? 97F is nothing, 97C is pretty hot and bordering on max. My i7 7700 idles at 27C and might get in the 40'sC when worked.

Well, if it's 3 years old, it could still be poor MOBO settings or outright MOBO failure. All those error codes you posted suggests it looses the drives every now and then or access to the drives, because systemd can't find any services. For me this suggests drive/bus controller failure from the hardware side.

Having multiple systems with no distro failures myself.

I tend to agree with Brains.

I'd at least use sensors-detect and https://www.smartmontools.org/

EndevourOS is a new Arch Linux branch one on me.
Wondering also if booting different kernels and changing gtk themes may fix things.

Edit; https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/S.M.A.R.T.

The beauty of using "dmesg" immediately after boot is that you get a definitive list of your kernel's interaction with your hardware.

Just configure your terminal to colour-coordinate for you.
