system crashes when using init 3

Hi,
I'm using fedora at the moment, and I'm trying to get Fluxbox installed. I've run the rpm, which went ok, although I'll probably need to check that. Now I'm trying to actually get it started, I drop out of graphical mode into the F1 terminal window, where I log in as root. The plan is to then drop to run level 3 using init 3, then use startx fluxbox, but the system halts after anacron Ok. All other terminals are useable, but I can't get back to Gnome, which could be just me being useless,

Any suggestions please!
Jim

XServer (i'm told) only runs on terminal 7 - press alt+F7 and try starting X again..

Alternatively, instead of using F1, while in X, bring up a shell, become root and type init 3.

Alternatitvely, (again :) ) edit /etc/inittab and make the default runlevel 3

Alternatively, in GDM, or KDM, select Fluxbox rather than starting it manually.

to start gnome once in init (boot) level 3, become root, type gdm or kdm (which ever is your display manager, could be xdm also ... careful with that, in my experience it defaults to qwertz keyboard map, which could be bad if your password involves a z or y).
