System>Administration>Software Update

I dont fully understand the rules that drive System> Administration> Software Update. The help doc tells how to use the function but does not explain its logic - and I dont know where to look.

My question - re Fedora 12

When I start the System> Administration> Software Update function it brings up a list of hundreds of updates.

1) Has the system screened those available and only offered me updates to software that is installed on my system, or is it a comprehensive list of updates including updates to stuff I don't have?

2) If it includes a bug fix to software I dont have, and I select it, does it note that I dont have the function and move or, or does it install the thing I dont have along with its bugfix?

Would appreciate some knowledge or a pointer to a place where I can get it.

Please explain what is your question here?
Personally I have not understood ;)

The update manager scans the system and usually offers you only those updates that are required for your machine installation. Some could be security, or just version updates. This could install some dependencies as well. The information is provided about the update.
It is giving you hundreds of updates? Is your installation a new one? And btw, Fedora is on 13 now.
