syslog.conf doesn't work for kernel 2.6.38.8 ?

1. under /etc, there's no syslog.conf
2. created /etc/syslog.conf which has only 1 line,
user.*<tab><tab>/var/log/myfolder
3. write a c code which calls syslog()
4. run the above code
5. in /var/log/messages i can see
user.info myprog: hello world
6. nothing in /var/log/myfolder

i'm logining as root.

Any suggestions ?

What does 2.6.38.8 have to do with it?

Much more importantly, what distro are you running, and what syslog program is it using? syslog? syslog-ng? rsyslog? Only the first one is configured by /etc/syslog.conf.
