when trying to run (purchased full v. of) windows password recovery ultimate, from usb flash, on acer aspire one, I am getting this msg: SYSLINUX 3.85 2010-02-20 EBIOS Copyright (C) 1994-2010 H. Peter Anvin et al could not find kernel image

I take it you received the password recovery tool as a CD image? If so, what steps did you take to go about writing it to a USB stick? Sounds like a couple of files (namely, the kernel image) didn't copy over properly.

It might also be an issue with this "windows password recovery ultimate" (I've never heard of it); maybe an incorrect syslinux configuration. There are a plethora of other tools that can recover Windows passwords, though; Ophcrack is one of the more popular ones, and even Parted Magic has a "PCLoginNow" utility for resetting Windows passwords. Perhaps try one of those tools?

I'd guess some issue with the sata cd/dvd drive.

The issue is that the boot (maybe microboot) loader is not able to complete the next step, which is loading the kernel.

From my odd thinking would be that if you paid for this software then you should have support. You may not have ever needed this too unless you have an encrypted filesystem on windows and other free ways don't work.
