Synaptic wants to remove all my stuff

Anytime I try to install something related to KDE with Synaptic, I get the message that 139 pachages will be removed. I did it once and ended up having to do a complete reinstall. I'm using a Knoppix HD install and I'm a little curious as to what is going on, and how to get synaptic to not want to hoze my whole installation. Or if someone could just tell me how to get apt-get to work with files that have dependancies. Thanks a ton.
