apt-get update 1sec
apt-get upgrade 1sec
apt-get check 1sec
apt-get install <package-name> normal time

it seem to be the graphical synaptic is failing... i even had to kill the process because it was so f***ing slow/freezing

May be we will get more info what is going wrong if you start Synaptic from the commandline and look for error-messages.
