symlink vs. fstab

Many install guides tell you about mounting /var or /home on separate partitions, and then mounting them with fstab. However, I've been mounting the separate partitions and merely symlinking to the appropriate directories. i.e.
I put var in /mnt/hda2 and in root /, I do a "ln -s /mnt/hda2/var var".
This means that hda2 does not have to be solely dedicated to var, and I can put other directories (such as /opt or /home) and symlink to them too.

OK, this has worked so far ... but is it really right. I mean could I also move /usr to hda2 and symlink to it? I ask this because /usr has all the shared libraries and stuff ...

Being a newbie, I'm unsure whether this methodof mine will lead to problems int he future ...

Comments appreciated.

It may, some softwares(though uncommon) don't work with symlinks.

you might want to try "mount --bind"
