Switching Windows Manager from Failsafe

I have recently installed SuSE 10 and I wanted to change my Windows Manager from GNOME to KDE to experience the difference. As I was configured for auto-login, I had to go into SuSE; logout; and then change the session.

I couldn't see KDE and so I selected Metacity. Now all I get is a turqouise screen and a mouse pointer when I enter Linux (I stupidly chose it to be default).

Please could someone tell me how I might set it back to GNOME from the failsafe commandline?

Also does anyone know why I'd be getting the blank screen from Metacity??

Or maybe someone knows how I could turn off the auto-login so that I can change the session from the logon screen??
