Switching Screen Resolutons in RH9

Hey there everybody,

Quick quesiton. I'm running RH9 on both my desktop and my laptop. My laptop is a ThinkPad T-21, and that's where I'm having the problem. I've tried using the gui tools to change screen my screen resolution from "800x600" to "1024x768". I've tried changing the res in both GNOME and KDE and each time the gui gadget gives me a big "THUMBS UP" and claims to write the changes I've requested to my /etc/X11/XF86Config file. I've tried both stopping X using ALT+CTRL+BACKSPACE and by rebooting the system. But each time I startx it keeps coming up in "800x600" and I'm left with a large black border around the edge of my screen.

Then I tried taking a look at my XF86Config file (as root) and saw that in the "Section Screen" and under the "Subsection Display" there were listed several screen resolutions. But "1024x768" was not one of the choices. So I tried adding it, but that didn't help.

I'm thinking that what needs to be changed is the listing for "HorizSync" and "VertRefresh", but the values listed there were cryptic to me, and I didn't know how to express the values for "1024x768".

I would've tried a "best guess" approach to changing those values, but I had no desire to blow up my LCD and end up like that guy in the Cryptonomicon who had to talk through a voicebox because his monitor exploded. ;)

Any ideas? Thanks!
-Tim

I think you need to hit the crtl, alt and enter keys together.
