Question switching from command line terminal to gnome or kde

Hi Guys:

I can move from one terminal to another, that is, Ctrl-Alt-F1 through F6. But when I press Ctrl-Alt-F7 to switch to gnome or kde a blank screen appears instead of the gnome or kde screen. Could somebody help me out in this problem or direct me to correct this problem.

Do you have the X server running?
If not try "startx" from one of the text consoles.

Thanks for your quick response to my question.

I do not have any X server running. I have stand alone workstation. I have tried the "startx" in the past and even today, this was the message on the screen:

fatal server error:
no screens found

Please, what else can I do to clear this problem?

Please don't contact me privately in regards to a forum post...it helps everybody if the entire thread stays out in the open.

"no screens found" means that you don't have a (valid) screen section in your xorg.conf file. Have you configured X yet? If not give 'xorgconfig' a try and go from there...
