Switch desktops

How do I switch desktops? I tried switchdesk kde and startkde, and startkde works, but it opens KDE inside of GNOME, so I still get the GNOME menus, but the KDE thing is where the desktop would be.

make a file in your home directory called .xinitrc and in it put exec gnome-session and then go into a terminal and type startx and it should bring gnome or if you want to switch back just put exec startkde instead
