Swap Partition in SuSe 9.1 Pro is increasing radicaly and causing system to crash
 

Newbie from Texas

I have Susie 9.1 pro running as my web server with apache. My system consist of an IBM e server X series 305 with two hard disk drives main is 70GB and Slave is 160GB, 1GB of memory, P4 processor 3.0 and with standard video, audio, 2 Ethernet ports 4 USB port (2front & 2back), 1U rack-mountable case design.

The problem is that Susie keeps crashing. The apache runs for about 5 days and then over the weekend it goes down. I narrowed down the problem but I haven't figured out what might be the cause. I am a novice user of Linux based systems. The swap partition keeps increasing until it gets to its maximum which is 1027MB (1GB) I don't know if this is my memory or not, like i said before I am a newbie to Susie and linux.

What do I have to do? Why is my memory/swap increasing? Do I have to reinstall? Please Help:newbie:

What error messages do you get? What type of crash is it, lockup, kernel panic, or what? What error messages can you find in the logs? Could you post the output from:
swapon -s

what programs are using up the memory? Run top and sort by memory usage.

Welcome to LQ. In addition to the previous comments, does it always go down over the weekend? If so, there may be some unrelated activity being performed during that time which is responsible for crashing the system (such as maintenance or re-wiring/electrical work, where the power needs to be cut, etc). That may not be the case but it's a possibility.

The main thing to do though is to look as the logs as jailbait suggested. Good luck with it -- J.W.
