Swap Partition Error when installing ubuntu
There is a Swap Partition Error when I am installing ubuntu... I have two options now...
(1) Seek help now... anyone knows how to fix that problem... (dont tell me to try gparted... it cannot recognize my HDD :() (2) Change to another distro... I am looking at Ubuntu, Fedora, Mint and Mandiva now... Which one do you suggest? |
please elaborate your question that what is the error and which step do you face this error?

If your system has VISTA, then you have to change your system BIOS settings in order to install linux !
|
Can you explain what system is giving you issues? Is it a laptop or desktop? SATA drive? You may need to change BIOS settings for changing sata working to ide. But not necessary. I have installed Ubuntu 9.04 on sata without changing this.
You also need to give more information on when you see this. Also tell what version of Ubuntu are you using. There could be issues with already one swap present on the system. You can boot into Live cd using Ubuntu and check your drive for existing partitions. And you seem to be having windows already on your drive. Have you partitioned your drive for free space for Linux. And make sure you have enough space as well. |
I was trying to use Ubuntu 9.10 to 100% replace my Window Vista system... The problem happens during installation after the summary is print.
I have tried to boot into live mode... but gparted cant even find my harddrive now... (I am sure the ubuntu installation wipe off my hdd because I cant boot from my HDD now...) I am screwed... |
How to change the BIO setting to IDE from SATA... Using the setup screen again?
|
Sorry... i know nothing in Window (I know how to use it... just dont know how to do window setup and trick) and Linux... I am just a newbie in everything...
I have this exact problem http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=934340 |

Let's try to establish exactly what works before blindly changing BIOS options or slamming in a different distro to try. Now. We can't see over your shoulder and we really need to get a better idea of what has happened, and what is happening. Turn the power off and let is sit for a few moments. Now, turn it on and go into the BIOS. Generally this is done by holding the Delete key down when you turn on the power. Does the drive show up on the BIOS? If it does, then we can rule out a hardware problem and start on a software problem. If it doesn't, then your drive has probably failed - it happens. Exit the BIOS. When you say "I have tried to boot into live mode" does this mean that you have a command prompt? If so, what is the result of running this? Code:
ls /dev/[sh]d* You also say "but gparted cant even find my harddrive now". What does that mean? What command did you use to get into gparted? Are there any errors listed? |
I just open gparted in system -> administration... but it doesnt detect my HDD... If you go to the link in my previous post, you will see a lot of ppl have experience the same problem... But no one can really solve it :'(
|
Once again, what is the result of running this command?
Code:
ls /dev/[sh]d* |
Result : ls: cannot access /dev[sh]d*: No such file or directory
anyway... problem resolved... I partition my drive manually... (it's weird... it cannot detect my drive in gparted program... but it can detect my drive during installation...) http://www.basicconfig.com/ubuntu_de...artition_guide |
Glad you got it working.
|
Good to hear that. But I have not seen anything like this before. But glad you came up with solution yourself.
