swap partition

why is a swap partition a requirement for a linux setup? What arguments would you use to decide on the size of the partition?

Hello and Welcome to LinuxQuestions,

This sounds very much like homework to me. If it is then you should know that we don't do your homework for you since you will not learn a thing from it. Also consider that, if it is homework, your teacher could also be looking at LQ right now. I suggest you try some Google and if in doubt come to us with clear questions. Have fun with Linux.

Kind regards,

Eric

In addition to what EricTRA said I would add that your premise is wrong. A swap partition is not required in Linux. Maybe that is what your teacher REALLY wants to hear but you'll have to be able to justify your (my) answer.

As stress_junkie pointed out, it isn't. In fact, there is a context (...or maybe two, depending...) in which it is uncommon to use one. Can you think what it is, or they are?

You could say that the amount of swap that you need in normal use, is the amount that you need to configure. This would be wrong, so can you see the flaw(s) in the argument? You'll need to be able to answer this to get maximum marks for this question.
