Suspend Issues

Hey I've been having an issue with suspend for a while now on my HP Elitebook 8540w. Sometimes it works perfectly but other times after resuming from suspend it'll just be a black screen with the underscore blinking indicating I can type. If I change to tty1 and login and then switch back to tty7 then it just goes back to my desktop and everything is fine except for the fact that I can no long suspend again until I restart my computer. I'm sorry if this is kinda confusing but any help is appreciated. Also I'm using Arch Linux kernel 3.0

EDIT: I have this problem in both Gnome and KDE

The problem is probably with your graphics card driver. According to HP, that laptop came with either an ATI of Nvidia graphics card. Which one do you have and which driver are you using?

I have a NVIDIA Quadro FX 880M. I'm currently using nouveau but I had this problem with the proprietary nvidia driver also.
