For the tar files, you untar them with a command like tar -xvf tarfilename.
Then you go into the newly created directory and compile the program using
./configure
make
(su to root)
make install
Frankly, what you need most is to start googling and reading some basic Linux tutorials.
DUDE I have been googling and reading my BUTT_OFF its just that every thing points me to a command of APT-get and then i am just cornered again.....!!!!!!!!!!!
read the link i posted you and that tells you how. Edit your /etc/apt/sources.list to use the cd's rather then the internet.
Then download the debian cd's for sarge or etch which ever you use.
boot into debian apt-get package name, install the package the link tells you it will pop out the cd draw, pop the disk in then do as the rest of the link i posted says.
Once thats all doen change the /etc/apt/sources.list file to use the repos again instead of cd's and you will be away.

Dude, I'm talking about learning the BASICS of Linux.
i am just too dum........ just help me with this
i have got cedega in binary debian package when i install it dependecy probs occur.which are
<.LINUX-DVT/DVT/Setup/cedega-small_5.2_i386.deb' ;echo RESULT=$?
Selecting previously deselected package cedega-small.
(Reading database ... 75266 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking cedega-small (from .../cedega-small_5.2_i386.deb) ...
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of cedega-small:
cedega-small depends on python-gtk2; however:
Package python-gtk2 is not installed.
cedega-small depends on python-glade2; however:
Package python-glade2 is not installed.
cedega-small depends on python2.4-dbus | python2.3-dbus; however:
Package python2.4-dbus is not installed.
Package python2.3-dbus is not installed.
dpkg: error processing cedega-small (--install):
dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
Errors were encountered while processing:
cedega-small
RESULT=1
how do i solve this using synaptic cuz now i am able to tunnel synaptic with that proxy server mentioned earlier....
this will then download all the packages it says above that are missing (if they are available). If some are not then it will uninstall cedega as cedega cannot be instll properly.
2.Suse takes about 3GB or more and pclinuxos takes under 1GB i'm sure.
FWIW SuSE's footprint can be under 1GB or over 5GB - it is all up to you as you select the packages at install time. A distribution which gives you options != bloat
Regarding multimedia
Not playing WMV or other proprietary formats is not the fault of SuSE/Novell - they are avoiding patent disputes while maintaining a largely free/OSS distribution, leaving you free to post copies on bittorrent or give DVDs to friends and coworkers. Most distributions won't do MP3, DVD, WMV, and other codecs out of the box, but adding that capability is a simple matter for nearly every distribution.
