SUSE Linux 9.2 Getting test and no graphics. I log in as root only and nothing else

I have just loaded SUSE Linux 9.2

When the system boots up I get only the text. I login as root, and am unable to get any graphics. I may not have enough space allocated. I have a 13G harddrive (old system) but could only format 2G for LINUX and about 850MB for the swap files. I tried xstart, startkde and inid 5? Get a few words that pop up then back to the cursor.
