Suse install problems

Like the forum name says, I'm a linux newb

Ok, I have a 200GB HDD (SATA) and a 160GB HDD (EIDE)

I have WinXP installed on a 40 GB Partition on the 200GB HDD

I am trying to install Suse on the 160GB HDD, but I get errors and it doesn't install. It says "These packages returned errors: ..." and it list like 10 packages. Then it continues to the boot loader and just stops at 62%

Might be helpful to list your complete system specs and also the exact error messages.

System specs:

Pentium 4 3.0C HT
1 GB PC3200 DDR (Kingston)
Intel 865PE HT P4 Mobo
160 GB 7200 RPM WD EIDE HDD
200 GB 7200 RPM Maxtor SATA HDD
XFX GeForce FX 5700 Ultra 128 MB
17 in. Samsung SyncMaster 712N 12 ms Response Time LCD monitor
Windows XP Professional SP 2

As for the errors, they were just some random packages. I clicked "ok". The install process moved on until the bootloader install hung at 62%

I just clicked "accept" in the lower right and it went to the rudimentary interface and said the installation failed.

Have you checked your Suse cd's md5sum against those on the Suse mirror (assuming they're downloaded iso's) ?

Mostly this is a hardware problem (in case you have original media; SuSE is extremely picky on CD drives). Try to install in failsafe mode or try another drive.

First off, I'd try abisko00's suggestion re. failsafe mode or another drive; but otherwise to check the md5sum:

a) Using Linux, use md5sum -cv <filename> (see the manpage for md5sum). K3b also can check md5sums for you.

b) Using Windows, use http://winmd5sum.solidblue.biz/winMd5Sum-install.exe or whatever burning program you have.

Cheers,

mj
