SUSE Install Problem
Hey guys... I've downloaded SUSE 8.1 from the suse site. I burned the boot.iso, and went through the screens to get to the hardrive installation part. That's where I'm having trouble. What's the best way to do this? I have 1 hardrive setup with 2 fat32 partitions. The 2nd partition has the SUSE folder on it, and the 1st partition has a fuc'd up windows on it, that I figured suse will take care of by formatting it. Anyway, when I pick the hardrive install, it asked which partition for the source, and I select the 2nd one. Then it prompts me to enter the source location, and I have no clue what to put it, but I try to put in something and it takes me right back to the picking partition prompt. I pick the same partition again, and then it says Cannot Mount Hardrive! What the?!? What am I doing wrong here??? I've looked for some documentation on the hardrive install and can't find any. Any help would be much appreciated! :)

any ideas??

Hey there,
I've got exactly the same problem. Can't get past this point... hmm... Grrr.... -Shade |
Can U tell us whether you want to install the linux in the first hard disk or second. Then i can help u out accordingly
|
I'd like to install on the second hard drive. It's currently got Win 98Se on the first HD and Lycoris Desktop/LX on the second... I'm not really liking Lycoris so I want to setup SuSE 8.1 on that second harddrive alone.
Advice? |
i have SuSE 8 and 2 hdd's and it wouldnt let me install to the second, somethin to do with bootin, anyways so i made a 100mb partition on my first drive and but all the boot stuff on there and then SuSe worked for me.
|
Idehlvi - Well... It would be on the 1st hardrive, and the 1st partition on that hardrive. Thanks for the replies guys. :)

Why dont you just opt to boot from floppy .I have suse 8.0
and it works fine. The os is on a 3.2GB hdd on primary slave.Until i get the hang of linux i am dual booting from hdd 0 on primary master. |
I would try booting from floppy, however I can't even _install_ SUSE since it won't mount anything, or recognize my ethernet card. It's an Intel Pro/100+ card, which should be supported, but for some reason the installer won't mount the cd drive, hdd, or use the ethernet... So I'm stuck here until Ican figure out how to do this.
I should say, I'm using the boot iso from the ftp download, it's about 17 megs. I was planning on being able to install via FTP since I'm on a T1 connection. Thanks if anyone can help:) -Shade |
Opt to boot from floppy??? I just used the boot.iso and burned it to cd like Shade did. Newlin, did you download the evaluation version? Cause the full SuSE 8.1 is 5.36 gig alone. I'm going nuts! I want SuSE!
|
Soundprizm-
At least I know i'm not alone in this problem... Maybe there's some sort of documentation on it somewhere out there. However, if anyone has any idea how to get around this problem, please let us two poor SuSE saps know. Thanks ;) -Shade |
Bumpity to the top... A little help? :(

Is there no hope?

Don't worry guys, I had the same problem before :-(
Here was my setup: harddisk1: - NTFS -> win XP - FAT32 -> contain the dl'ed 8.1 rpms - FAT32 -> I want to install it here harddisk2: -linux 8.0 I downloaded the whole /8.1 and burnt the boot.iso and start from there for: - harddrive install = no luck :-( - ftp install = success :-) The key success of the ftp install is this: - load the correct network card module - know the ftp server ip address - know where the /8.1 on that server Everything goes smootly afterward. I use personal router tho so I use dhcp on my installation. Since I have dl'ed 8.1 minimum installation or the defaut one is fine. Don't forget to configure monitor later ;-) here are some ip numbers and the servers, do some research tho maybe 8.2 just out ;-) ftp://ftp.chuck.ucs.indiana.edu(ip=129.79.6.12)/linux/suse/suse/i386/8.1/ ftp://mirror.mcs.anl.gov(ip=140.221.9.138)/pub/ftp.suse.com/i386/8.1/ Here is some other, use the closes one and don't forget to find the exact directory tho SuSE German FTPs: (134.76.11.100)ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/ (137.226.116.98)sunsite.informatik.rwth-aachen.de/pub/Linux/suse/ (141.20.1.43)ftp.rz.hu-berlin.de/pub/mirrors/ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ (134.102.228.70)ftp.uni-bremen.de/pub/mirrors/suse/ (134.109.132.147)ftp.tu-chemnitz.de/pub/linux/suse/ (141.43.220.143)ftp.tu-cottbus.de/pub/unix/linux/suse.com/suse/ (130.83.2.34)linux.mathematik.tu-darmstadt.de/pub/linux/distributions/suse/ (134.108.34.10)ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de/pub/Mirrors/ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ (132.230.1.17)ftp-suse.uni-freiburg.de/pub/suse/ (195.52.219.14)ftp.nikoma.de/pub/SuSE/ (141.57.1.11)ftp.htwk-leipzig.de/pub/suse.com/ (141.57.1.11)ftp.htwk-leipzig.de/pub/suse.com/ (128.176.191.21)ftp.join.uni-muenster.de/pub/linux/distributions/suse/ (139.30.8.115)ftp.uni-rostock.de/pub/systems/unix/linux/suse/i386/ (139.19.1.151)ftp.mpi-sb.mpg.de/pub/linux/mirror/ftp.suse.com/ (194.94.30.52)ftp.fh-schmalkalden.de/pub/linux/suse/i386 (134.60.246.5)ftp.rz.uni-ulm.de/pub/mirrors/suse/ (132.187.3.2)ftp.rz.uni-wuerzburg.de/pub/linux/MIRROR.suse/ International Mirrors: (192.42.62.2)mirror.aarnet.edu.au/pub/suse/ (192.42.62.2)mirror.aarnet.edu.au/pub/suse/ (132.246.160.5)ftp.nrc.ca/pub/systems/linux/suse/ (130.225.247.90)sunsite.dk/mirrors/suse/ (193.52.61.12)ftp.iut-bm.univ-fcomte.fr/pub/Suse/suse/ (192.108.114.80)ftp.duth.gr/pub/suse/ (147.102.222.210)ftp.ntua.gr/pub/linux/suse/i386/ (195.38.96.124)ftp.suselinux.hu/pub/suse/ (146.110.3.6)ftp.bke.hu/pub/mirrors/SuSE/i386/ (192.132.34.17)ftp.unina.it/pub/linux/distributions/SuSE/ (160.80.22.30)ftp.uniroma2.it/Linux/suse/pub/suse/ (192.26.91.193)ftp.kddlabs.co.jp/Linux/packages/SuSE/ (195.129.111.8)ftp.nl.uu.net/pub/linux/suse/ (153.19.0.141)ftp.task.gda.pl/mirror/ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ (193.136.198.175)darkstar.ist.utl.pt/pub/suse/ (136.145.187.121)linux.cnnet.clu.edu/ftp.suse.com/ (193.231.236.58)ftp.linux.ro/pub/mirrors/ftp.suse.com/ (193.233.9.194)ftp.chg.ru/pub/Linux/SuSE/suse/ (130.206.1.5)ftp.rediris.es/pub/linux/distributions/suse/ (80.64.32.30)suse.grn.es/pub/suse/i386/ (161.111.153.40)ftp.dqbo.cartuja.csic.es/mirror/suse/ (194.71.11.40)ftp.sunet.se/pub/Linux/distributions/suse/suse/ (195.176.255.9)sunsite.cnlab-switch.ch/mirror/SuSE/suse/ (212.219.56.146)ftp.mirror.ac.uk/sites/ftp.suse.com/pub/ (130.207.108.134)ftp-linux.cc.gatech.edu/pub/linux/distributions/suse/suse/ (140.221.9.138)mirror.mcs.anl.gov/pub/ftp.suse.com/ (129.79.6.12)chuck.ucs.indiana.edu/linux/suse/suse/ (216.254.0.38)ftp.rpmfind.net/linux/SuSE-Linux/ (141.217.1.27)ftp.wayne.edu/pub/linux_distributions/SuSE/ (152.2.210.109)distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/suse/suse/ Have a lot of fun :-) |
Thanks a lot aherm!! :)
I have one problem tho. There's no network module for my network card. I have the linksys etherfast 10/100 Lan Card. I have the linux drivers from the site, just don't know how to load the module. I see I can't click on "more modules", and then it looks for the floppy, but when it looks to the floppy there's no network modules found. Why won't hardrive install work!!!??? |
*Bump*
|
I guess if try and error loading those generic network card modules doesn't work and no other card available then...
Try the hard way  Download SuSE's United Linux (available as usual: linuxiso.org) Burn CD1 and CD2 (no need CD3) Boot and install from those 2 CDs Now plastic surgury  Install available SuSE's 8.1 rpms onto UL 1.0 Install apt for SuSE (needed to back YaST2) Install fou4s (needed to back automatic YOU) You won't regret until 8.2 available for download ;-) Have a lot more fun :-) |
Final Solutions
Either way you guys wana want to install the suse in primary or secondary.
For primary if u dont get to stuck to microsoft windows then there is no need to do much just insert the cd and go on with the setup but if u need to have dual booting of both the windows along with the suse then u need to mount the hda 1 and hda 0. Here hda 0 will be for the windows partitions and while the hda 1 will be used for the suse linux, while setting these things i recommed u to use the freeware partition software called ranish partition manager. Same applies to the secondary hdd, but though u can install it on the secondary hdd but i still recommend u to make a boot partition in the primary with atleast 16 mb size. Signing off bye and hope this cud solve ur problem. |
