suse does not recognize hard drive

I am attempting to install Suse Pro8.2 on a new dell power edge SC420, but when the software attempts to recognize the hard drive, I get the following error:

"No hard disks were found for the installation. Please check your hardware"

Then, in the summary, it reads:

No automatic proposal possible. Specify mount points manually in the 'Partitioner' dialog.

If I attempt to manually partion (which, I don't want to do, I'd like to have the software automatically partition), it still does not recognize anything and does not allow me to manually partition. I am only going to use this server for linux, so I am not apposed to formatting the hard drive; also, there is currently no operating system loaded on the server. I have read in other threads about trouble with a SATA hard drive (mine is a 40GB, SATA, 1inch, 7.2k RPM hard drive).

Hmm, I don't know what sata drivers are included in 8.2. Could be that sata is not supported in this version. You may try to load the driver in the 'Manual Installation' dialog. What controller do you have? I would guess that you need ata_piix.

But the best solution would be to use a newer version ;)

Thanks. How do I know if I get an updated version of Suse, I won't have the same problem?

I can't assure you that the problem will be fixed, I can only tell that I am using ata_piix without any trouble. There was a little struggle with 9.0 (could be solved with the APIC bootoption), but 9.1 detected the drive automatically and included the correct driver into initrd.

excellent, thank you...I will try it!

I've actually been having the same problems with installing Suse 9.2. I posted this question both on two other forums without any luck (so far).

I will try to let you know if I have any luck finding the answer.

Alternately if you have joined anywhere else just do a search for Specify mount points manually and you may find my question posted and one day hopefully answered.

nothing yet, but i am hopeful!

the problems being a :newbie:

I have the same problem. I am installing SuSE onto a IBM xSeries machine.
It seems that we need a driver update floppy but where they are?

I am using SCSI drivers and they are not found.
