SUSE BOOT does not find SUSE/ usb drive

I have installed SUSE 8.2 to a 20GB freecom removable harddrive. The drive is partitioned with the first 50% being FAT format for Win98 use. The issue is I can only run the SUSE by booting from the installation disk near the end of the install procedure but it is a long winded way to get there.

The boot loader menu seems to work but it cannot seem to find any linux and a linux boot disk does not work either. I have also tried to use boot magic 8 software. From Win 98 on my 1st Harddisk the boot magic can see the removable drive. I suspect at initial boot up stage the drive is not recognised. I would be thinking the drive is unsupported but its hard to see this being the case if the installation CD boot program can see it.

I have also tried installing the boot and root parts etc of linux on to a 1GB linux partition on my first drive but this too is unsatisfactory as the installation then does not see enough room or the second drive for the purpose of installing applications. I then still have problems booting as it seems to stall when it finds a usb connection for my removable drive.

I can only think that i need a boot program that works like the installation CD. Being new to linux i am not sure how to edit any existing boot program appropriately.
