SUSE 9 Login Issue - Looking For Pointers

I am in the process of making my laptop run SuSe 9.

I have come to a point where there is a new login screen and when I try to login as clove, it kicks me back to the login screen. If I login as Root I am ok.

I could just as easy, create a new user and kill clove, but are looking to find out what caused this problem. (so I know for the future)

I started to install the yahoo IM package from Yahoos site. It said for redhat. I think thats what caused my problem.

in looking around, after a failed login if I press CTRL + ALT + F1 I See something about Failed Services in Runlevel 5. On the right side it says.. cups (in red) and smbfs (in yellow)

can someone help me out?

That looks like a whole host of troubles.

A good source of information about troubles
is always /var/log ... do an ls -ltr and look
at the most recent files there....

Firstly, I don't think that ymessenger could
possibly kill the login for your user. As root,
enter
passwd clove
and set it anew ... maybe you had caps-lock
on when defining it? Also, try to login as
clove from the command-line interface to
see whether there's error messages that
X will hide from you.

As for CUPS, see above. There should be
a cups-specific logfile that should state what
kind of trouble cups was facing. Same for
samba.

Cheers,
Tink

I have been having trouble logging in as well. It happens in kde. I have applied available patches. I can login as root most of the time. It happens randomly, kde hangs on the initialization step. I am using icewm as regular user now. I see nothing in messages.

SUSE 9.0
