SuSE 9.3 - Soft Raid
I need help on setting up a Software Raid. I am a Newbie to Raid but not Linux.
(I am the founder of the Alaska Linux Users Group) This is what I have: 2 - 80 Gig Hard Drives. And I want to be able to create a softraid RAID1, I have followed the Howto's as follows: (Using YAST2) /dev/hda---------------------------------------- /dev/hdc ==================================== 20 Gigs /dev/hda1 /------------------20 Gigs /dev/hdc1 4 Gigs /dev/hda2 /boot---------------4 Gigs /dev/hdc2 20 Gigs /dev/hda3 /var/--------------20 Gigs /dev/hdc3 1 Gig /dev/hda4 SWAP---------------1 Gig /dev/hdc4 SWAP This setup is covered on page 28 of Software-RAID-HOWTO Converting a non-RAID REDHAT System to run on Software Raid. Even though I am using SuSE. Now when I use YAST2 to create soft Raid there really isn't much documentation in the YAST2 Manual. Ok during the initial installation, I go to expert partition Mgr. create the above. Using EXT3, as the RAID create instruction indicate. Then I click on the RAID option and click on create RAID this is on the first Drive hda, it indicates that I must have 2 partitions of 0xfd. Now when you create a software RAID to you create the RAID on both drives or just 1. Like if I change all of the partitions of hdc to 0xfd. Now if I did that which drive would be the mirrored drive. I am setting up a DNS server that I have installed soft RAID several times on and I have still not been able to get it to work properly. Probably because I have never set one up. |
Check this site out. I have used it in the past

Software Raid with SuSE 9.3
Looks like I'll need SuSE 2 Disk they are offering for free. I tried the soft raid setup per GoFacts and was unable to
format drives. Actually it lockup the system. I contacted SuSE and they indicated I would have to get the 2 CD Utils set they offer. So I have ordered those. Although I wish they would offer the ISO for the disks. - WL7JA - Pat |
