SuSE 9.2 Installation Problems

I have a HP zx5078cl notebook and am unable to install my SuSE 9.2. On boot, the initial kernal is loaded, then the system simply hangs. Occasionally I will get an ATAPI error, but most of the time it simply hangs. The laptop comes with a generic DVD/CD+RW. Using Google, I see where other users have been able to load linux, but are experiencing relatively minor problems, sound card, multi-card reader, etc.

I have no clue why the initial kernal can be read and loaded, but then the system simply hangs like there is a driver problem with the DVD drive.

Any suggestions..........???

Thanks.

Rich Jones

.
SuSe setup hung a few times for me when there was a usb device connected.

Also, ACPI could be causing this. Try to start without it.

I just attempted to install again. System boots into Linux DVD, loads kernel, finishes to the point of going into the 1.7 Installer. That is where my system hangs. I tried installing without ACPI, manually, everything.......but every attempt stops at the point where the installer is to be activated.

Contacted SuSE tech support. The only way we could get 9.2 to install was with ACPI turned off and an additional command 'apic COLDPLUG=1", or something similar (I'm too new) :-). SuSE loaded but the driver for the notebook touch pad is a little buggy, and my DSL connection is benching at 768mps, rather than 1.5. I was also having problems with getting update patches, as YOU kept reporting checksum errors.

But.............at least there is a Linux desktop and GRUB boot loader (albeit horribly slow). I am considering another clean install, as I have never had any problems with SuSE 9.1 on my AMD64 desktop.

I've got a tutorial that shows how I got linux running on my zx5078cl. Everything works now except suspend and resume. Check this link out: http://www.geocities.com/fizgig10/zx5078cl/index.html
