Suse 9.2 - Hanging on blue screen before login

Just installed this from the DVD on my A64-3000, 1gig, 6800. The install went fine, set aside 15gb for the partitions and let it do it's thing.
Big problem though in that when it boots it gets to a blue screen and then it just sits there, now from here the login box has appeared once but I couldn't do anything but all the times before and after that I just get the blue screen. I have tried installing with not ACPI but again no cigar. Anyone have any suggestions of something I can try? Many thanks.

Ok, the only progress i've managed to make is that if I hit Ctrl-Alt-backspace before the X turns to a pointer a frozen login box appears, I can't type it, it's just stuck there. I also tried Gnome over KDE but no joy. Anyone....?
