Suse 9.2 "GRUB Hard Disk Error" Help!
 

The problem I have is that when I finish Suse's installation and shut down the pc, and boot again I get an error: "GRUB Hard Disk Error" (ctfl+alt+del does not reboot, it just hangs there). My computer has WinXP on 2 120GB HD on RAID 0 and Suse is installed on a separate drive 120 GB IDE. I've updated my BIOS to the latest version, installed Suse couple of times over and still get the same error. Board is an Intel Desktop Board D875PBZ. I think that Suse doesn't support having GRUB on RAID master boot records. I also tried to mess around with Yast Bootloader config but to no avail.

Also the installation recognizes my WinXp OS as "Linux Other" on GRUB, its an NTFS partition.

And another thing, this is fixed if I boot to the BIOS directly and just exit and then I get the OS Selection screen, weird. The errror does not appear if I restart any OS once the OS selction screen goes up.

What could be wrong? Kinda stupid having to go to the BIOS everytime I boot up just to get an OS running.

your bios is likely to go to raid drive and raid drive then linux drive?

grub sees raid as ONE drive so to confirm see my trouble shooter

if I am right it will only find hd0 (raid drives 1 and 2) and hd1 your linux
then boot into linux and amend your /boot/grub/menu.lst to change that hd NUMBER for linux

btw I am assuming grub is on the same drive as suse linux?

but grub can go on all 3 drives.

It is probably better that you change to bios boot to suse drive amend the menu to change hd NUMBERS and do the same for MS to hd1

Which drive should I have at BIOS to boot first? The Linux or WInXP RAID drive?

i am suggesting change the bios to boot the mbr for linux and use grub to chainload to ms bootloader which leaves your mbr and bootloader intact for MS......so if you don't like it you just change the bios boot order back to ms drive.

btw if you read the tut ms bootloader can chainload to linux but its your choice.

If you agree with the top option you may need to change the hd numbers.......
