SuSE 9.1 newbie questions

First off thanks for anyone that may be able to help me.
I installed SuSE 9.1 today on a Toshiba Tecra 8100 Laptop.
Everything was running fine except for the sound. Thats the least of my worries at this point.

I was logged on as my username jurassic. Started up Yast and did the online update. It installed a Kernel patch. Said to reboot after installing everything. I let is all install and then rebooted. Now it comes to the graphical login and I type in my username and password, the screen goes black and comes right back to the login prompt. I can log into failsafe console, but thats about it. I can log in as root, but I'm sure if I log off and try to log back on it will do the same thing with root. This happened the other night with a fresh install also. I never did figure it out and I just ended up reinstalling from scratch. I did find out that if I create a new user I can log in one time with the new user then the same thing happens with that username if I log off. It will just go from graphical login, log in and then it will return to the graphical login. Please help.....

Can you login by text (Textterminal (Ctrl+Alt+F2) or ssh from another PC)?

You can start yast (not yast2) as root on a text console, please check the user settings, is the "Allow remote login" (or similar) checked ?

And finally, is there enough space left an the device (type "df -h") ?

I'm giving up honestly. I just started the re-install of SuSE a few mins ago. I hate feeling like an idiot with an o/s. All these years of being brainwashed by windows...hehe

What happens if you disable the sounddevice, maybe failsafe works due no use of sound ?

I actually purchased a copy of SuSE9.1 as I did with 9.0 & 8.2 I've had nothing but problems with 9.1. I also could not get sound to work. along with a whole load off other things. Is this a "rushed" release just to be the first 2.6 distro?

Try Mandrake 10 it's a top distro and the only one I've had no problems with EVERYTHING works a treat, nVidia and all! very much worth a try. I now no longer need Windows for anything!!!
