Unhappy SUSE 9.1 Modem

Hi
Trying to get into the wonderful world of Linux, but modem issues are getting me down.

I do have a Intel Ham Modem, which Suse 9.1 Personnal does not see, I've tried installing drivers but I have a error saying my kernal is not supported

What modems do work for Suse 9.1 . I've been told that serial external modems should work fine. Is this the case, any modem better to use then others? How would I go about it?

Please help this struggling newbie

Andy

You may have a bit of a game getting that modem working.

Here's the first place to find out more about your modem. You say that you're trying SuSE 9.1 personal, well is it a "boxed set" ? because they've usually got some stuff about configuration in the book's.

And here's another good place to start looking.

I'd suggest that you have a good look through the linked pages, you may have to be more specific in your identification of your modem.

Sorry I can't be of more help, I also had an internal ham modem, but I don't bother with it as I've got a dsl line, plugged up via a modem/router and an ethernet NIC

regards

John

Yes if you have a software modem you may have lots of trouble and consider yourself lucky to get it going at all.

"Any modem better to use than others?"

Answer:

"Cable Modem"

Well I'd have to say an internal hardware modem. Not software (windmodem). Go for US Robotics...

I'd look at the SuSE hardware compatibility list myself. You can bet that if it work's under linux then it'll work under windows as well.

Then that "should" give you a list of makes/model's to look at. You can then check out what's available locally - erm you should still check the linmodem's site as some external ones are also winmodem's!

regards

John
