I'm trying out SuSE's 9.1 free as dual-boot with the hideous Win98 (not that newer versions are any better, of course) and of course I'm having dial-in connection problems - I've tried Debian and RH6, 7 and 8, and the same problems crop up. This seems standard to people going from inept-unstable-but-idiot-tolerant MS to rugged-stable-unbreakable-but-mystically-dense-and-obscure Linux.
And is that a short or long 'i'? Line-ex? Lynn-ex? Hummm?
I'm using a Conexant winmodem, curse Bill Gates, but I'm having exactly the same prob as with RH and a true modem on another machine, which never got resolved but oh well. At first I thought it was lack of driver, but when I downloaded a driver, I found there already was that driver package mounted - if 'mounted' is the right word: anyway, it's there, and on boot-up I see the Conexant modem correctly and successfully initialized.
I think I've told the computer that I have a local network, when I don't; I stand alone, prosaically. In initializing the system using Yast, there was no modem icon under "Yast ->Hardware " but I found one under "...-> Network " and initialized that.
The "Kinternet" log runs just as it should, dialing, giving my username, until -

I also have the output of "hcfpciconfig -dumpdiag" which is HUGE! and INTIMIDATING! but I put it on my Windows(curse Gates) hard drive so's I can get at it while online.

Out of what i understood you have a 56k winmodem. I can remember those times. I remember reading something that told me (i agree curse Microsoft) that winmodems were only for windows, and didn't work on linux. Moreover, linux is almost dependent on the internet, for exemple, if I am not conected my system will take twice the time to boot(mine is the extreme case of networking dependence). So, i realy recomend you to get an ADSL connection.
Or buy a normal modem, not a winmodem.

p.s. Windows is not obscure, for me windows is inposble to understand, i get crazy each time i use it, always an uncorectible bug. In the old times, (when i had windows) i had to reformat my pc each week. Now of course i could cope with an infinite time.(of course i don't, my fun is instaling and trying other distros)

If I go without buying one other thing all month, I may be able to afford the $30 for the full version of SuSE. A new modem, though logical, or a DSL is out of the question. Even though a good idea. I'm poor. I'm so poor.
But happy. The trick, you know, is just deciding you're going to be happy; anybody who isn't happy now but will be when they get out of school, get a job, get married, get divorced, get the big car, take the big vacation, retire, die - such a person will never be happy. So I'm happy. Poor, inept, frustrated but happy.

Gee, it all looks so great. I like the style of the browser Konqueror, of the desktop, even the default font looks cool. The little bouncing icon that follows the mouse around when a program is starting is irritating, but one 'preciates knowing that something is loading. I just wish it woulnd't bounce. But the ability to change the look and feel and response of the window environment is a thrill. Me so happy.
