suse 9.1 live eval

Newbie here. I downloaded SuSE 9.1 live eval to try it out. Is SuSE 9.1 live eval only command line? After it loads it immediately asks for a login which I entered root then there I am. No GUI?

Thanks.

Please post what video card you have. You might want to try Knoppix, it has better hardware detection.

What happens if you type 'startx' (without the quotes) after logging in? Please post the error messages you will likely receive.

Thanks for the replies. I have a geforce2 mx gfx card. I tried 'startx' and I get this message:

"There is no link /var/X11R6/bin/x to the correct x server binary. Please configure the correct x server with SaX/SaX2, which will create the missing link. I'm aborting now."

 Any ideas?
I did also download knoppix 3.6. It great. That's why I wanted to try out SuSE live.

Thanks again.

No prob, if u wanna experiment a bit more with different live distros, some others are gnoppix (knoppix with a gnome desktop), MandrakeMove, MEPIS Linux, and many more. Go to linuxcd.org and on the left click live cd. It will give you a list and each has a description when clicked on.

Assuming you are still logged in as root in the console, I would suggest typing sax2 (I imagine that's the name of the binary of the config utility they're referring to) as suggested, to configure the correct X server.

I'm not a SuSE user, but I would think that the messages would be fairly self-evident (since SuSE is considered very easy to use), or you could always post what information the utility is asking for and we could help you figure it out.

I looked more closely at what was being loaded when I booted the live cd and I saw that there were some errors during the load:

.
..
...
/usr/sbin.cupsd: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/libssl.so.0.9.7: cannot read file data: input/output error

/user/sbin/hwscan: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/libhd.so.8: cannot read file data: input/output error

Start scan on boot
Start cron daemon
Start name service cache daemon

Can't open /usr/lib/hardware/unique-keys/*: no such file or directory

Starting service kdm

Failed services in runlevel 5:
Skipped services in runlevel 5:

It's probably because I downloaded a bad ISO since the whole thing is running off the CD correct?

This is possible. Always md5sum your downloads.
