SUSE 9.1 and gcc, cc, c, c++, mpich libraries
 

Hi there,
I have installed the personal version of SUSE Linux 9.1. I have to install some libraries in order to install a program. I need gcc, c, cc, c++ and mpich. (PS: I might need yacc too) I have tried to to YaST but did not find anything. I tried to search gcc, but the only thing that came out from search is libgcc. Can someone help me to get these files? It is written everywhere that YaST is the main program to get the files, but I cannot find these libraries. I will appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.

those files should come with the basic installation of the distro, but if you don't have them, you should do a Software (package) install and search for c compiler or, go to rpmfind.net and download them from there.

SuSE 9.1 Personal does not contain development packages. To install them, you may want to add a SuSE-FTP server to your Yast installation sources.

Yast -> Software -> Change Source of Installation
Add -> FTP
server: ftp.suse.com (better use a mirror )
directory: pub/suse/i386/9.1

Install the missing software the usual way using the 'Install and Remove Software' module of Yast.

I strongly recommend to use the SUSE packages!

Thanks a lot for your help. I have added a new source of installation (FTP) and when I searched gcc, I saw some extra packages. I have installed them, and it seems that gcc is working now. (PS: Your suggestion on using a mirror site was useful. I have changed it to the Chicago,IL server and it was pretty fast) The only problem I am getting with linux is that I have never used it, and therefore it is not easy to understand the logic on the things working in linux. YaST, as u have said, is the main program; I have realized it. Otherwise, installing a new package is a real mess. Thanks a lot again for your help.

Yeah, for a beginner it's always advisable to use Yast and rpm packages instead of compiling from source. On the other hand, real fun starts with compiling ;)

I have done everything as said, but YAST has been "reading package information. One moment please" for about 10 minutes, I've got a dial up copnnection to the internet, should I not try to install these files in this way?

Maybe it is because of the server u have chosen. ftp.suse.com server was pretty slow in my case. So, I had to change it to another server. Check out the following website and choose the best server for you. http://www.suse.com/en/private/downl...t_mirrors.html

The chicago server was pretty fast for me. Hope this solves. Ciao.

ok, it worked, eventually!!! yeah, thanks abisko00, i'm totally new to linux as well and as a result am confused most of the time, especially if I want to install anything!!!!
