Just go into Hardware Configuration and change the driver that it is using.

Well if you are using KDE ... Open up the menu and click on Control Center
Once that is open. There should be a menu option (if I remeber correctly) which is called Yast Modules? hehe... I'm not at home right now but it has something to do with Modules. Go in there and it should give you another menu with the option for Hardware... in there you should be able to choose Sound Card. Once that comes up you'll have an option to start up in "Administrator Mode" a.k.a. Root and everything else should be self explanatory... unless you are unsure as to how to choose a different driver under the menu. If that's the case you will have to wait until I get home tonight or unless someone else knows how.

The NM256AV is actually a video card controller. The NM3298 is your audio controller as you stated but there appears to be no sound card drivers online for it. Maybe you do a search for it since you have a better idea of what type of soundcard and system you have. I'm not sure which drivers would work with your soundcard.

*edit* Err... correction... I guess the NM256AV doubles up as an audio controller as well... heh like I said... it's hard to know when you don't have the system right in your hands

If this is a sony laptop there is a site that talks about setting up Linux on it:

It is a real old Dell Inspiron 3500, I decided to play with Linux on an old machine first.
Thanks again.
I am clueless and a total newbee to this OS - it goes to show when you are comfy with what you know, it is scary to go out and meet the unknown. I thought I was good with PCs, he he much to learn.
