SuSE 8.2 Live Evaluation
Firstly let me apologise for posting this in a second forum but I am getting the impression that posting it in the Linux-Distributions forum was not the right thing to do initially.

Secondly I got the Live Evaluation to see whether I would want to have Linux as a secondary OS next to XP. I am however concerned by some things which I am not sure are restricted to the Live Evaluation copy or are problems that would afflict me if i got a "full version" of Linux.

Can't open CD-RW

I am able to access the CD-RW drive (i can see the SuSE Live Evaluation files when I click on the drive). However when I press the eject button the drive the drive doesn't open. When I right click on the drive and use the eject function, the following error appears.

I suppect that because this is the Live Evaluation model it won't allow me to take the CD out of the CD-R drive.

Modem and Internet Connection
The modem I have is recognised as a SG Thompson. I downloaded a rpm file from the manufacturers website. However I am informed that the file var/lib/packages.rpm is read only (there might be another directory after lib). As root user I cannot change the current settings on the file. This also leads me to believe that there is restricted functionality as a result of this being a Live Evaluation version. The logfile from KInternet is included.

BTW, I can't remember where to find the Query Modem function. Could someone direct me as I would like to add that as well as the startup log.

You can't open your CD because SuSE is running off it. That would be like giving your PC a hard-drive-ectomy while Windows is running!

Modem? Dunno. Perhaps someone more familiar with KDE modem config can say something. Warning: your log file is an MSWord Doc - not popular in these parts! (Export as HTML maybe before posting it on your site).

That's what I suspected re the CD.

The logfile is saved directly from KWrite. I just added the doc extension.

I am not familiar with Suse live or even Suse distro, however reading on their web site the live CD is to see if Suse will recognize all your hardware, it boots off the CD and (I'm assuming) it does not install any thing on your hard drive. So this is why you can't eject the CD after booting it and also I would assume that it does not write any logs because it would not be mounted on your hard drives

But I can recommend that as a new user of linux you may want to try out Mandrake 9.1, you can download the ISO images from for free. It has excellent partition tools to repartition your hard drive to set it up for dual booting with XP.
