SuSE 8.1 Pro issues...
 

First off, glad I found this site. Thanks LinuxQuestions.org.

I installed SuSE 8.1 Pro on a generic box (AMD Athlon XP 1.6, 512MB RAM, 2 HDs - 8GB and 20GB, DVD drive). When I initially installed it I had a problem with it concerning the CDR drive I had. The install from the CD drive worked great, but when I booted I got the msg "hdc: bad special flag: 0x03". The system would allow me to access the CD once, maybe twice, and then it would hang - HARD. It froze with blinking lights on the keyboard.

I tried installing a generic DVD drive I have to see if it "liked" that better, and reran the install (plus I wanted to install from DVD :) ). Once again the installer used the DVD drive with no issues for the install, but when it was finished and I rebooted I got the same error.

I did a ton of research in the SuSE support site, and finally found a suggestion to load cdrom and ide-cd to the initrd_modules var in the sysconfig (as suggested here: http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/81_ide-scsi.html ). I did this, and the error went away, and I do seem to be able to use the drive now, BUT the hardward app in KDE shows TWO DVD drives on my box. It showed this before - one with a wrench indicating config, and one with a red X. Now, after loading these new modules, one has a wrench and one has a green check. But on my desktop I have a link to two DVD drives, and I only have one.

My questions are:

Did I do the "right" fix? Is there something else I should have done? What can I do to remove the second listing for the DVD? Should I worry about it?

BTW, I still have some stability issues (it is still freezing up occasionally), and I am not sure if this is related or not.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Well I wish that I could help you but I am having the same problem. In fact I found your post trying to find a solution for this issue. I too have SuSE Linux Pro 8.1 and have had no luck trying to fix it. This is the specs on my box,

MotherBoard: Shuttle AK35GT
Processor: AMD Duron 1.2 Ghz
Video Card: nVidia GeForce 4 MX 440 SE
Harddrives: Maxtor 40 Gig - OS Windows XP
Maxtor 20 Gig - OS SuSE Linux 8.1 Pro
Sony DVD-ROM Drive DDU 1621
Sony CD-ROM Drive CDU 5221

In which like you said it lists the CD/DVD drive twice. So In my case it lists four drives, two for each. Plus along with this It has not been able to read CD's. The only way I was able to fix this problem was to remove my DVD from my box and only use my CD drive. Which it only listed it once. That was the only way I was able to install Linux. It would not read disk 2 and disk 4 on the install but disk 1 and disk 3 read just fine.
Any help on this subject of ours would be great thanks.

That's kinda strange:I run SuSE 8.1 and dont have those 2 modules loaded and I can read and burn CDs just fine.I do have my drives listed twice,but happened only after I upgraded to the latest xcd-roast/cdrtools.And that was because the cdrecord utility doesnt need scsi emulation now and setup lists each drive as scsi and atapi.
The lockup problems(dead keyboard,could move mouse but buttons dead)was fixed by running YaST Online Update.No lockups since.

You have to be root to delete some of those ;-)

You can have as many links to your single DVD drive as many applications need.

As in desktop, you can have or create as many links as you want, but it is wastefull (right click at those icons and see the properties).

Just delete any cdrom links on your desktop. Leave DVD-ROM and CD-RW only if that is all you need.

Should you need a new shortcut then create a new link for your device/app by right clicking on the desktop, select appropiate icon for that (this is easy on KDE desktop).
