Suse 10 "Login Screen Setup" Does not Work

Hello!

I am trying to change the login screen theme. I am using KDE in Suse 10 and go to the sysemt --> configuration --> login Screen Setup . However by pressing "login screen setup" nothing really opens up. It seems that the command is trying to open something but after a about 20-30 seconds (of trying) nothing happens.

I had this worked once but I reinstalled the Suse (about 4 times now!!!) and that particular menu option does not open up to allow me to change the theme of the login screen.

Help please if you know how to fix this.

Thanks!

I can't tell you why the GUI isn't working, I generally don't mess with that stuff. You want to put your new theme in a new directory under:

/opt/kde3/share/apps/kdm/themes/

Then, to use it, you need to edit:

/etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc

Find:

[X-*-Greeter]
...
Theme=/opt/kde3/share/apps/kdm/themes/SUSE

and change it to the directory you added. Also make sure that:

UseTheme=true

is set. (It's set by default)

It should take effect on the next login, you can test it by doing "Switch User"/"Start New Session". If it doesn't work, just select your old session in the "system" menu and try again. (no need to log out)

When you say you are using KDE, I assume you mean kdm as the display manager. This is the default upon installing SuSe 10.0.

The link you are clicking is the GDM graphical configuration utility which won't lauch under kdm.

Usually configuration of kdm is done via the kde control center; having said that I'm also running into problems because the changes I'm making with that don't translate in kdm.

More updates are progress goes.
