Suse 10.2 wont shut down

I am reasonably new to Linux , had Suse 10.1 (it worked well) and upgraded to 10.2 however now my machine wont 'shut down' I have tried putting acpi = force in /boot/grub/menu.1st however no different
machine just hangs and I have to hit reset button and boot Windows or pull out plug ??

I do see a message during boot up that says 'no acpi support in kernel' what does this mean ??

couple of other annoying problems but want to fix this one first .... any clues ????

hello, I used suse 9.1,9.2,9.3,10.1,10,2. I only use linux on desktops. I had the same problems with windows and a few linux distro's. You might have a bad virus or other hardware (drivers) problem. If you can't find out how to fix it. I don't know if you have a dual boot setup. If you install dual boot wrong you can have other problems. I always erase the harddrive, checksums the cd or dvd media.I then reinstall the operating system. Everything should work fine for long time unless you go to x sites, to many worms and virus there.I noticed a new problem on my suse 10.2 box if you do torrents too much it will mess suse up with a virus.I miss my suse box, now a pcbsd 1.34 box very stable. If you are talking about a laptop you may have driver issues too. I recommend at least 512mb of ram. at 768mb of ram suse linux is a superb system indeed.

Thanks Kalman ... a little more info .. I have a desktop with 2 80 gig drives one has Windoze XP the other drive has Suse 10.1 plus Suse 10.2, I do have adequate RAM ...
I have no known virises (yet that I am aware of) and windows operates satisfactorilly , however when I loaded 10.2 the problems started, ie the shutdown doesnt work with Linux (Windows is OK) , I also use Mozilla Firefox , however that wont work with my Yahoo mail (ie the Suse 10.2 version of firefox, the Windows version still works)I also used F-Spot with 10.1 as a screen saver however I cant get that working with 10.2 either .... but the main prob is the shutdown problem, I can actually see the Linux script say 'shutting down all systems ' or words to that effect and my machine actually makes a click noise as though it is shutting down but it just 'hangs' ... most annoying ...

well if you upgraded without doing a fresh install, there may be dependencies that need to be taken care of. If the system is not upgraded "correctly", then there may be problems later on during use.

Don't think this is a virus. See this thread: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=516862

I have the exact same problem as described in the thread I linked to. It worked fine with 10.1, and actually for a while in 10.2. I think it started hanging at shutdown after a kernel update (not 100% sure, because I have delayed fixing it for too long :P ). Started looking for a solution right now, but it seems like it could be an acpi related problem.
