SuSE 10.0 no longer wants to see internet or get email

Hi Experts,

I installed Suse 10.0 and I have been running XP parallel for transition period... (not going as smooth as hoped).
All of a sudden, Suse doesn't connect to any sites ("www.google.com could not be found. Please check the name and try again.") or get email ("Unknown host mail.webserver.com").

I don't know what I did. I don't recall fiddling around where I shouldn't be. :) (given that I am an ultra-newbie and have close to zero unix/programming experience)

The cable running from router to desktop is securely in, the lights are on showing connection is established. I can access the router configuration via 192.168.2.1. But, that's it.

Any advice?

Until I can get this fixed - I must use XP. :( Just when I was feeling less MS withdrawal symptoms....

Thanks for any help!

bsmith

I have gotten that problem once and all I did to fix it was to go into Yast, go into settings, without changing them and then click next all the way out of the configuraion utility for network connection. This usually restarts the netowork connection and, in my case, fixes the problem. But this should only work if you did not chnage any internet settings. There is a possibiltiy you might haave changed something accidentally. Good way to get into linux, learn how to fix the problems. ;)

sounds more like a DNS problem more than linux.
what are your DNS servers ? are they reachable (via ping)
can nslookup find sites ,like google.com ?
if not put some in your /etc/resolv.conf

It sounds like you are not configured for DHCP. DHCP should automatically set up your DNS nameservers and your gateway router address for you. Not being a Suse user myself, were you presented with a screen asking "Use DHCP or Configure manually" or words to that effect?
