surfing much slower with router than desktop connected to adsl modem

Hi

Asking for help again!!!

problem surfing the web when system goes thru my router and the adsl modem.

Home network using static ip address with primary and secondary address in each station.
Amd2k running fedora core 7 or windows 2k
P3_933 running mandriva 2007 spring edition
Laptop toshiba running windows xp
3 other machines running xp home or proffesional
All these are connected via a 100 mb switch , the router and finally the modem supplied by ISP
The router is static mode for home network and dynamic at the Internet side. The big problem is the excess long wait to access a page when not getting time out request. (connection is 5 mb via telephone)
I experimented using my laptop directly into the modem and using dhcp the result does not compare... much much faster.
I also tried fom laptop to router to modem and i have the same problem(extremely slow)
I also tried using dhcp for home network but no success.

I did a ping using ip or names (yahoo.com)
using ip is faster and regular interval and using names is slow and irregular for time response.
i am sure my problem is name resolution related but i do not know what step i should take to track down the problem.
Also my rout er is an smc 7004 abr with the last firmware installed (2 years for the firmware on site)

I called the provider ans the line is ok as i expected.

MY problem seems to be coming from a defective or incorrectly set smc 7004abr router. I experimented and found that the probable cause of the problem.
The wan light on my router is constantly flashing meaning send or receive mode as soon as it is connected to the modem even when no lan cables are connected to it.this traffic is generated between isp modem and router alone, nothing else connected. Does anyone have an idea of the possible cause

tks
emeut

Look in your router's interface. My Linksys router's have a Setup tab, under which is Network Address
Server Settings, where you input up to three DNS servers.
