Sun Fire v20z Server Not seeing more than 2 Gig memory
 

Hi All,

We have a Sun Fire v20z AMD server. We have 8 Gig of memory in it. The BIOS sees it as 8 Gig but Red Hat AS3 only sees 2 Gig. We can not get it to see more. Anyone have any ideas?

err typo correction...it only sees 4 out of the 8 Gig of Memory.

Kernel HighMem issue. There's the normal 1Gb limit that a default kernel comes with, then a 4Gb limit that is any given distro's usual HighMem kernel, and then 64Gb limit that runs slowly on machines with less then 4. Check to see if RH has a 64Gb kernel, I'm certain they do. Offhand I don't have any of the RH licenses, but hey man, you're paying for that support, smack 'em around a bit until they give you the right sized kernel.

However, we are using the correct 64GB Kernal. We used the same RH AS3 software and Kernal on a v65x server and it works fine. Just isn't working on the Sun Fire v20z server. Any other ideas?

BIOS limitations? Or rather a BIOS clip on RAM? I'm not familiar with the Sun x86 boxes, but that's all I can figure. If the kernel supports it and the box's bios does a full count on boot then there's something wonky going on between bios and kernel.... but its definately one of the two.

Damn, this is one of those times I really wish I could poke the thing you know?

I thought I'd post a quick message on here, as if you're using Red Hat AS3, I assume that you've splashed the cash and have bought it along with support from Red Hat.

On a Linux SysAdmin course my work sent me on in August, run by a Red Hat certified systems engineer (at least I think that's the right qualification?), he warned us that Red Hat, even though they supply it, don't actually support the HugeMem (64GB) kernel, even though they supply it! Which seems arse to me but still. So might be worth being a bit cagey if you give them a call. A don't know if this is still the situation, and where I work we haven't any support contract with Red Hat, so can't really advise further.

Just thought I'd let you know what we were told though.
