Suggestions for new printer

Hi:
I am looking for suggestions for a new printer purchase, preferably an All-in-one unit.
It needs to work with both Linux (for me) and WinXP (for my kids)

Thanks in advance.

by all-in-one unit, you mean printer, fax and scanner ?

regardless, you'll need to ensure linux will support it (windows support is pretty much a given), so decide on the print method and then see what devices it will support.

I use CUPS - http://www.cups.org/ and it supports my old Canon BJC 255SP, but I don't do anything really fancy with it.

I think the problem you are going to encounter is that the different aspects of the unit need to be supported by both printer, scanner and faxing software, and you'll need to check all three.

Good luck

I have an HP all-in-one used only for Mac and Windows, but would quite like to have it working with linux. The only source of info I know about is:

http://hp-linux.org/hw-support/list?category=4

-- not very encouraging if you want to use all the features of a multifunction.

On the other hand it should be easy to find a multifunction which at least prints from linux. See e.g.

http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/p_..._Printers.php3

Copying and faxing is independent of the PC anyway, but you will only be able to scan in Windows. The supported linux scanners are listed at

http://www.sane-project.org/

I had quick look but saw no multifunctions there
