Successful connetion to OpenVPN server but IP address does not change

Hey everyone, please help me out here. I've been trying to figure this out for days.

My server and client are both running Ubuntu 16.04, and both return a status of active (running). I can connect to the VPN using my network manager no problem. However, my IP address does not change when checking DNSleaktest.com.

What is the cause of this? Not specifically, but when an IP address is changed via a VPN, what is going on behind the scenes? Where can I look for this fix? I just can't figure this out, please help.

Nothing to 'figure out'....it's working exactly as it should. You have one IP address for your ETH0/WLAN0/whatever-is-connected-to-the-internet device, and one for TUN0, which is allocated by your VPN server. Your public facing internet address should NOT change...why would it? Any connection to VPN would then terminate, since the address it was sending traffic to would cease to exist after connection.
