stupid vmware question

I already have win98 se installed on my computer and want to select it in vmware. I tried to select the following:
/mnt/win
/dev/hda1

Neither of those worked and vmware just complained... Where does linux (im using mandrake 9.1) REALLY store the windows stuff vmware needs to see? I heard something about a hardware profile but dunno what to do about that

thx in advance

I'm not exactly sure what you mean but if you're trying to boot your windows partition using vmware, it won't work because it doesn't work that way..

on this forum http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ghlight=vmware
they said they could... I just need to know how to select the OS and set the hardware profile so linux knows what to do.

Oh yeah you can try using a physical disk, in the wizard choose advanced and just point to /dev/hda if that's the disk you're using(you need to be root). But I wouldn't if i were you, win98 is bad enough at handling multiple device drivers for a single device, and I've experienced cases where an improper shutdown in vmware corrupted the whole file system.
Bottom line, do it at your own risk.

k, ill try at my own risk... i reformat so much anyways... thx demonbane

i couldn't get vmware to select the partition (the program quit unexpectedly) so instead i tried sticking in the win98 disk as vmware started up. When i get into dos and go onto the the C: it says i have about 1mb of room free... The image i created was 4gbs? Why isn't there more space?

Demonbane 09-11-2003 11:27 PM

Either it will grow when u need it or you didnt do fdisk/format and C is the ram drive.

tearinox 09-12-2003 05:37 PM

and what is the systemdrive then? I did fdisk on the ramdrive (c) and it would not let me format. I rebooted the virtual disk and now it says "Missing Operating System"

I created another virtual disk and this time tried to just go to the setup.exe on the cdrom and it said not enough room. The virtual disk is 4gbs??? Why isn't it working??
