Ok i admit it i'm a windows user mainly and i now remember why i'm a windows user.....

Firstly i've been trying for the past two weeks now to get my nforce2 drivers working so i have SPDIF out as its the only way i can get sound, and i can't the module wont load :E

Secondly no matter what i do my ATi drivers don't install correctly, no 3D hardware support everytime it doesn't even notice its a Radeon9800Pro.

I mean WTF... if this OS is sooo much better why does it fall flat on its face when u need to install stuff? when it comes to installations linux is more than in the darkage.

I decided to give it a go out of curiousity, and i've been playing with at work and quite liked it, it seems compaq prolient servers have full support (old hardware)

Comes to my comp u need to do this do that patch this patch that compile load modules ERROR ERROR nothing fucking works. I'd be happy and nice and in a great mood if i could get some help too but some reason its like talking to a brick wall and no one seems to want to know pifft just another n00b, yes i am but we al started somewhere right!!, theres only so much u can get from searching endless forums looking for an awswer that doesn't exist.

Well i've tried mandrake9.2 and redhat 9 as there the only ones that support SerialATA it seems, and they both give me the same errors each time, it must be user error but somehow i've tried doing in the ways i've seen other ppl say and the same thing happens.

You would have as many problems if Linux was bundled with every PC and you bought a PC with (compulsory) Linux installed and tried to install Windows from an install CD.

Rather than go through this agony you should buy a computer with Linux pre installed. Microsoft has cowed the computer manufacturors to where they will not sell a PC without Windows installed to a consumer, but they will sell a PC with Linux pre installed to a corporate customer. So change your name to International Enron Accomplices and buy a computer with preinstalled Linux, hold the Windows.

when you need video drivers in windows, where do you go? do you go to windows update for your video drivers? no? you go to nvidia or ati you say? guess what, you do the same thing in linux. linux has nothing to do with video drivers. the video drivers that are included on the install have no 3d support whatsoever. so take your mouse and go clicky clicky onto nvidia or ati's site and install the drivers. while you're there, take a look at the README file for installing such drivers.

Well so far i have noticed everyone on this thread is right. I downloaded my nividia drivers from them (the nividia website) had no trouble installing 'em. But also the original poster is right if your not used to installing (compiling etc) on linux, if this is all new to you. It can be a bit much, The best thing i can do for you is to tell you be sure to read the manufacturer's install notes help etc.... Even after i installed my nvidia drivers i still had to manually edit my xf86config file to tell the computer which driver to use.. I would'nt have known to do that, save for the install notes that were in the website. So dont give up once you have everything running the way you want i think youll like it...

by the way stu, most ppl here used to be windows users.. even me for the longest time it went like linux, no windows ,no linux for a long time till i got really good at fixing thing's. and i tell you it's worth it. Linux has a whole host of opertunities windows does not..

reet well yes i have been looking at the manufacturers notes for both both the ati drivers and the nvidia drivers, on how to do it but it just won't do and it spits it dummy out with the ATi drivers and the soundcard I just can't understand why its not working. which is whats driving me up the wall so much finding any sort of useful understandable info is impossible.

And i'm sorry for going off on one but it seems if u post a thread asking for help one seems to give a shit.

anyway......

the nvaudio will not initialise, its producers lots of errors something to do with IRQ, and thats another thing i get an error saying spurious IRQ and linux stops booting everyonce in a while

I have the Abit NF7-S if that helps any i've not idea if anyones had any problems with it as i certainly haven't seen any.

I'm currently using mandrake 9.2 altho it detects my soundcard if i set it to nvaudio without the nvidia drivers installed it still can't run the soundcard :E

my lack of understanding coupled with too many unhelpful ppl is doing my nut atm (sorry to bitch again)

give this a shot. one got rh 7.3 to work and another got mandy 9.0 to work with the nforce based systems.

See my mobo in my sig. Same thing just with out the SATA. Mine works fine.

I'm sure you didn't learn windoze in one day so give Linux a chance. I only use Linux. That's in my sig below too.

As for the Nforce driver I don't even use it and my on board sound works. Don't know about the SPDIF thingy though. Dont have anything to test it with. Sorry

I have come to learn that the nforce drivers are not what they should be. I have read where people have the same, well almost the same, complaints.

oh yeah i like it, but i'd like it more if i could get it to work properly, the most important thing is i get 3D hardware acceleration working and my SPDIF as thats all i have

right after reading around it seems that the AGPGART driver doesn't work with any cards other than nVidia cards, is this true? If so what do i do about AGP support for my ATi card?

There are patches to correct this.Unfortunately I don't have the links anymore since I did get a nvidia card.SPDIF 'should' work - you'll need the nvidia driver and edit /etc/modules.d/nvaudio to spdif_status 1
I can't check it but it loads w/o errors here.

i can't even get the module loaded for the nvidia drivers

when its loaded at bootup it displays [FAILED] twice then boots into KDE and then that throws up two soundcard errors too

Well maybe you should start with a new thread about the SPDIF and another one about the ati nforce2 thing.That way you'll get people to look at it that might know about the problem plus there is a lot of guys that don't even look at threads with a title like this.
You'll need to include info about:
What distro are you running.
What kernel - find out with: uname -a
What drivers - for nforce2 there is oss,alsa and the nvidia drivers AFAIK only the nvidia drivers support SPDIF.For ati there are also different drivers.
The output of lspci -v (you probably have to run this as root) might also be helpful for you sound troubles to see if the sound is recognised at all.

i'm using the drivers off the nvidia web site and i was rebuilding the source rpms. I'm using mandrake 9.2 RC2 so its the base kernel that comes with that so its 2.4.22
