I tried that. I only had a prompt that said; file log.
So you did not get a root shell?
Quote:
At the log file prompt I tried 'ls /etc/init.d' and it return a page full of command options. I tried 'less /var/log/messages' and and it returned a message something like already in file log: Return. I didn't understand what to do....So; I re-installed Voyager.
Ohh. I'd not heard of Voyager so I had a quick search. It seems to be yet another buggy repackaging of Ubuntu. Any particular reason you want to us it?

If I try to update Mozilla 12 to the current version which is Mozilla 23 do you think I will get the black screen again and be back where I was?
I suspect it was not the mozilla upgrade that caused your initial problems but the upgrade of X11 packages.

Evo2.
Yes, I did get a root shell and a root prompt but knew not what to type at that prompt:-
I actually like this distro and it's the only other distro besides Fedora 19 that this UEFI BIOS will let me install to this machine- I have tried to run Live CD/DVD of other distro's and all I get is a black screen.
I suspect that it is because Fedora has a key and so does Ubuntu 12.04 because Black Opal runs great:-
Have you installed the proprietary AMD drivers for the card?
Not yet. Tobi helped me find it yesterday- In fact I installed it yesterday and than the black screen stuff started after the update/upgrade.
It's the new AMD Catalyst 13.8 Beta Driver http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles...etaDriver.aspx
I did a fresh install of Voyager and all is ok now.
In the meantime I'll have to learn more about Recovery Mode. There should be plently of documentation online about it and in the
distributions documentation as well.
In time I may consider another distro but the UEFI BIOS on my new build only recognize a distro with the key like Fedora or versions of Ubuntu
12.04 that have this key. And how I came to know that in the case is all of the other distro's that I tried to run a LIVE Linux CD only gave me a black screen.
But when I tried to run those same Live Linux CD/DVD on my 'old desktop' that does not have UEFI BIOS the LIVE CD upon booting up was not a black screen. In fact it booted up fine and I was able to interacted with the Live distro just fine.
After a phone call to the manufacturer: MSI they explained 2 things to me.
They said that UEFI is only only going to effect Win's 8. (Win's is not on my new build) But the motherboard z87-gd65 has the "UEFI BIOS".
I explained that I did not request this nor did I want it.
The MSI representative further explained that Legacy and UEFI is now a combination that can not be seperated.
EDDY1, jdkaye and evo2 that you for your help and support on this.
Congrats, but I don't think that selecting a laptop or MB by with the choice of not having UEFI,Secure boot & GPT partitioning, is going to last very long, so we may have to be ready for that next steep learning curve.
