Stuck in GUI mode, Updated & Upgraded the system and Firefox
 

Hi::)

I'm having trouble with Voyager 12.04.
All I did was update/upgrade Mozilla Firefox and upon rebooting I had a black screen. Did a hard shut down and booted to another distro as I have 3 drives on this machine and the other distro booted fine.

Now I'm stuck in the Console mode and don't know how to fix this.
Here's what I'm looking at:
What should I be typing at this prompt?
I honestly don't know, never seen this before--

What is make & model of computer?
What graphics, is it proprietary?
Have you checked /var/log/messages?
Have you checked Xorg logs?

I think I'm stuck in console mode as for the computer--

It's a brand new build that I built myself:

No; I can't boot into the distro it goes from my GNU Grub menu right into console mode-:cry:

Do you mean "stuck in the GUI?" I sounds like you mean "stuck in the command line". I'm guessing you're in a TTY with a black screen background and a prompt to do something. Is that correct?

you can read the log files from the console. Log in with your usual username and password, and use the console in the same way you would use a terminal emulator in X11. Eg
Evo2.

I rebooted and got my GNU Grub menu and upon booting it gave me a black screen.
It just hangs there at the black screen.
I don't even have that commandline prompt now-:confused:

Been up all night. It's now almost 3:30 a.m. I have to get some rest Eddy, jdkaye, Evo-

I booted up the computer and all I have is a black screen.

I tried Ctrl+Alt+F1 and tried Ctrl+Alt+F2 to log into the console. That did not work. Still just a black screen-
Wasn't able to run ls /etc/init.d for you-

Sounds like it may be time for a fresh install. What do you think?

How about while at the GNU Grub menu try going into recovery mode? Never tried that so I'm not sure:-
Would that let me get the files I need that are sitting on the desktop?

Absolutely! I didn't realise you had that option. Do that and then type the ls /etc/init.d and we can set what display manager, if any, you have installed. Give it a try and report back. Good luck.

I re-installed Voyager.

Does anyone know why an update/upgrade to Mozilla caused this black screen and console

You need to get a shell, so select "drop to root shell prompt".

I tried that. I only had a prompt that said; file log. At the log file prompt I tried 'ls /etc/init.d' and it return a page full of command options. I tried 'less /var/log/messages' and and it returned a message something like already in file log: Return. I didn't understand what to do....So; I re-installed Voyager.

If I try to update Mozilla 12 to the current version which is Mozilla 23 do you think I will get the black screen again and be back where I was?
