Stuck at the log-in/lock-on screen

When I enter the password at the log-in/lock-on screen(when booting up), it is giving the following message(see the image link), and I can't proceed further. Any ideas?

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, have been using it for the past 3-4 years, but never encountered this problem before.

What do you mean, can't proceed?
The image shows you are logged in, can't you type anything or what?

I can type but am not sure what I should type there. Haven't seen that screen before, where has the usual Desktop gone?
